Ramona tried to decide if that was a promise — a threat of how things would go if she continued to meddle — or if it was the future already laid out before her. Rosa’s gentle gaze gave nothing away. And then the Mother of the Desert was gone and Ramona stood once more on Whiskey Row with the courthouse across the street, the café at her back.

Maybe she should go home. Back to Tucson, at any rate. Because she had no den, no nest, no cave, no house — nothing.

She had only herself.

That was always the trouble. It was why she was so angry at Corina, even though she knew she wouldn’t have stayed with Billy.

She had only herself, and the momentary comfort she could find in another’s arms. But it never lasted…

She had only herself.

She sighed, and turned to look at the café for a long moment. Then she stepped into el entre and headed back to Tucson.

David and Emma Johnson had a beautiful, big house on the west side of town, the kind of place that you immediately felt comfortable in: hardwood floors with lots of dark wood trim standing out against the stucco walls; Navajo rugs, rustic Mexican furniture, gorgeous sculptures and paintings everywhere. The rec room they had fixed up for the concert was bigger than some of the clubs we’ve played in and there was obviously more than enough room in the house for us to have taken them up on their offer for lodgings, but I have this thing about staying with strangers. I like meeting new people, I just don’t want to live with them right away.

If we can afford it, I much prefer to get a room in some nearby motel or hotel — at least until I get to know people. But if there’s a next time around for us here in Prescott, I’d definitely stay with the Johnsons.

Both David and Emma were perfect hosts and they either had a lot of friends, or they’d done a bang-up job on the advertising, because there must have been over forty people in attendance. We don’t often use sound equipment for a house concert, but I’m glad we let them talk us into it for this one. Not to crank it up, but the room was big enough that subtleties would have easily gotten lost without the PA.

I was curious as to what Jim’s reaction would be when Alice showed up, but I didn’t learn anything. When I saw her come in, I looked to where he was standing at the back of the room. His head went up and he immediately looked in her direction — like they were connected the way Bess and I are — but then he only smiled and nodded hello.

And then it was time for us to play.

I glanced at Bess. Since she was still fine-tuning her banjo, I thanked the audience for coming and introduced us.

“We saw you have a fairy festival in town tonight,” I said after the preliminaries.
